Buffering of coconut fibre is a chemical process consisting of replacing sodium and potassium with calcium, washing away excess waste.

Coco coir is an excellent option for a bulk substrate due to its antibacterial qualities. You can combine coco coir with vermiculite to help retain moisture while providing the substrate more aeration to help the mycelium throughout and gypsum for added nutrients and to prevent clumping. It will enable for quicker colonisation period on average. It is a 100% organic eco friendly multi purpose growing medium, animal bedding and a natural absorbent.

This bulk substrate is simple to prepare. The only important thing you keep in mind is that you need to bring it to filled capacity—it should be completely hydrated and won't hold any more water than three-five drops when squizzing.

The ideal way to achieve this is to either add the exact quantity of water or add excess and drain it off. There's a good way to determine if it's on its field capacity.

Usage of a substrate that is too wet or too dry is a common mistake. It should be damp but not wet, with a gentle squeeze enough to release a few drops of excess water.
